Abia Government Begins Compensation Process for Property Owners Affected by Ohanku Road Acquisition

The Abia State Government, through the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), has issued a formal notice to property owners in parts of Aba whose structures are affected by the ongoing land acquisition along Umuosi, Ukaumunna, and Ihuoma Streets by Ohanku Road.

In a public announcement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Amaechi Chibuzo, on behalf of the Director General of GADA, the government called on all affected private property owners to visit the Legal Department of GADA, located at No. 4 Constitution Crescent, Aba, to complete the compensation claim process.

The exercise will run from Thursday, July 10th to Friday, July 11th, 2025, after which the government will take full possession of the affected areas.

“This is a formal notification to all private property owners whose buildings fall within the government’s acquisition zones to come forward for documentation and compensation,” the statement read.

Affected persons are expected to come along with the following documents for verification and processing:

  • Valid property documents

  • National Identification Number (NIN)

  • Bank Verification Number (BVN)

  • Abia State Social Identification Number (ABSSIN)

  • Two recent passport photographs

The GADA PRO emphasized that this compensation window is part of the government’s commitment to due process and equitable compensation, even as it moves forward with critical urban development projects in Aba, especially within the Greater Aba Renewal Scheme.

However, the announcement also warned that failure to comply within the specified timeframe will lead to the government assuming full possession of the acquired properties, including the possibility of demolition without further notice.

This development is part of the broader infrastructure upgrade and urban renewal agenda championed by Governor Dr. Alex Otti’s administration, which seeks to reposition Aba as a functional commercial and residential hub in the Southeast.

The Greater Aba Development Authority has assured affected residents of transparency and fairness in the compensation process and urged them to act promptly to avoid complications
