Governor Alex Otti Hosts Senegalese Foreign Minister in Abiriba as Her Son Weds Nigerian Bride

The peaceful town of Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State came alive on Sunday, April 19th, 2025, as the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, warmly hosted the Foreign Minister of Senegal, Mrs. Yassine Fall, who was in Nigeria for the traditional marriage ceremony of her son, Samori Sombel SY, and his Nigerian bride, Mary Aluba Okafor.

The ceremony, which took place amidst vibrant cultural displays, was a remarkable fusion of West African unity and a showcase of Igbo traditional heritage. The presence of dignitaries from across Nigeria and Senegal marked it as an event of international significance.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Sen. Kashim Shettima, GCON, was ably represented by the Honourable Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, adding more prestige to the occasion.

Speaking at the event, Governor Otti congratulated the couple and offered fatherly advice to the bride, urging her to love, respect, and stand by her husband with patience and understanding. He blessed the union and assured the couple of his support, promising to attend their white wedding, wherever and whenever it takes place.

"This union is not just a celebration of love but a bridge of culture, diplomacy, and unity between our two nations," Gov. Otti said.

In her heartfelt speech, Mrs. Yassine Fall, the Senegalese Foreign Minister, thanked the Governor, the Abiriba community, and her new in-laws for the warm hospitality extended to her delegation. She expressed deep satisfaction with the cultural richness, kindness, and reception she received, and pledged that her son will be a loving and responsible husband.

"This moment means so much to me and my country. This marriage is a symbol of stronger ties between Nigeria, Senegal, and Abia State in particular,"she said.

The event attracted top government officials, traditional rulers, and the créme de la créme of Abiriba society, including several appointees of Governor Otti. It was not just a wedding; it was a celebration of intercontinental connection, a diplomatic handshake between Nigeria and Senegal, and a tribute to African unity and heritage.

As drums rolled and dancers entertained, the people of Abiriba played host with pride, reaffirming their place as a vibrant and welcoming cultural hub in Nigeria.
