Abia State Government Lifts Ban on NURTW, Reaffirms Commitment to Fair and Safe Transport Sector

The Abia State Government has officially lifted the ban previously placed on the operations of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) across the state. This was announced earlier today by the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, during a strategic meeting with a delegation of the union.
Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Ukaegbu emphasized that the decision to lift the ban reflects the administration’s dedication to fairness, structured governance, and its ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing the transport environment across Abia State. He noted that the Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, has continued to show unwavering support toward creating a safer, more efficient transport system for all residents.
The NURTW’s national leadership was represented by the National Deputy Chairman, Alhaji Aliyu Isaa Ore, who stood in for the National Chairman, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (popularly known as MC Oluomo). Alhaji Ore expressed deep appreciation to the Abia State Government for restoring operational rights to the union and praised Dr. Ukaegbu for facilitating the process.
He assured the government that the NURTW would align fully with the transport policies and objectives of Governor Otti’s administration. “We’re here not to cause confusion but to contribute meaningfully to the growth and orderliness of transport in Abia,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Chukwuma Azode, popularly known as China, was introduced as the new State Chairman of the NURTW. In his remarks, Azode pledged that his leadership would mark a new era of discipline, collaboration, and modernization within the union.
“We are leaving behind the era of lawlessness,” he declared. “This is a fresh start, and we intend to use this opportunity to rebuild the union’s image and improve the face of road transport in Abia State.”
Other members of the newly constituted executive include:
- Chief Chuks Isaac
- Ephraim Promise
- Chief Ogaranku
- Chief Eze Okwuleghe
- Abacha Pius
- and others.
Also present at the event was the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport Matters, Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe, who commended the collaborative spirit shown by all stakeholders and stressed the importance of order, accountability, and respect for government regulations.
The lifting of the ban signals a turning point in Abia’s transport sector and reflects Governor Otti’s broader goal of driving inclusive governance across all sectors.
