Abia First Lady Partners Vision Spring Initiative to Equip Law Enforcement with Global Tools to Combat Gender-Based Violence

In a proactive move to curb the alarming rise of gender-based violence (GBV), the Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, has collaborated with the Vision Spring Initiative to train security agencies on international best practices for addressing GBV cases.
The training, held at the Police Officers’ Mess Hall in Umuahia, brought together officers from various law enforcement agencies. It was organized in partnership with the Office of the Wife of the Governor, the Ministry of Women Affairs, the Abia State Orientation Agency, and with support from the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF).
Joining the event virtually, Mrs. Otti delivered a powerful address, highlighting the urgent need for a coordinated and strategic approach to tackling sexual and gender-based violence in Abia State and Nigeria at large.
“Gender-based violence is not just a personal or family issue—it is a violation of human rights and a societal crisis,” she said. “Law enforcement officers are often the first point of contact for victims, and their actions can determine the course of justice.”
She emphasized the importance of prompt victim rescue, evidence preservation, and professionalism in handling cases, calling on participants to return to their posts with renewed commitment and knowledge.
Mrs. Otti also expressed appreciation to her husband, Governor Alex Otti, for prioritizing GBV response in his administration’s funding agenda. She acknowledged the support of the Abia State Commissioner of Police, as well as the Vision Spring Initiative and AWDF, for championing women’s rights and safety in the state.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of Vision Spring Initiative, Mrs. Ngozi Nwosu Duba, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to promoting gender equality and protecting the rights of women and vulnerable populations.
“We are proud to work with the Abia State Government and the First Lady, who has shown admirable leadership in addressing GBV,” Duba said. “This training is not a one-off initiative; it is part of a broader movement to build systems of protection and accountability.”
Delivering a goodwill message, Commissioner of Police CP Isah Danladi, represented by Deputy Commissioner DCP Hiatu Shaffat, commended the Vision Spring Initiative and affirmed the police’s commitment to ensuring justice for GBV victims. He noted that the training would significantly enhance the officers’ ability to handle cases with empathy and professionalism.
The event featured interactive lectures, real-life case scenarios, and a Q&A session. It was attended by notable personalities, including former Abia FIDA President, Mrs. Amanamba, and several high-ranking state officials.
This collaborative training marks a significant step in building institutional capacity and transforming Abia State into a model for gender justice, human rights enforcement, and community protection.
